Incursions for primary and secondary schools (Adelaide metro)

Our scenario-based workshops inspire students to build a meaningful relationship with food and the environment by exploring what we might be eating in 2050.

Workshops run for 90 minutes and are suitable for year levels 4-12

Themes and Content

**NEW CONTENT & UPDATES FOR 2024**

After lots of positive feedback the past few years, we sat down at the start of this year and thought about how we could make our workshops even better. Incorporating your feedback, we've consolidated the content and made it more interactive and personal for students. We've written new and playful 2050 scenarios, woven first nations content throughout, and created an opportunity for students to write their own food future scenario.

What might we be eating in 2050?
Our workshops facilitate a scenario-based exploration into alternate food futures including “Growth” (how do we feed a growing population?), “Limits” (re-thinking the value of food if we have limited resources) and “Disaster” (creative food sources for climate change). Themes include emerging food technology, the water footprint of food, climate change and food systems, first nations food knowledge and edible insects. Students are invited to think, taste, discuss, play and reimagine their own food future.

Our approach
Conversations around climate change often leave people feeling anxious about the future. As artists, we have the ability to engage audiences with difficult issues in an accessible empowering way, offering hope for more positive outcomes. We use audio, video, imagery, food tastings, discussion, drawing and interactive digital technology, with variations and adaptions depending on year level. If requested, content can be tailored to specific themes depending on your classroom focus.

Content has been developed with financial support from Creative Partnerships Australia, the Suzanne Elliot Trust and Inspiring SA National Science Week.

FAQs

How long are the workshops?

At least 90 minutes will allow us to cover the full range of content, but we can work within your school’s double lesson block.

What tastings are include and do you cater for dietary requirements?

There will be 6-8 tastings served throughout the workshops which will vary depending on seasonal availability but may include: freeze-dried ice-cream, edible insect products, kangaroo or camel mettwurst, seaweed chips, tempeh or tofu, roasted salted legumes and native foods. All tastings will be nut free and gluten free, with dairy free options available. We ask you to send us a list of any allergies at least one week prior to your booking. In particular we need to be aware of any shellfish allergies as this allergy can translate to an edible insect allergy.

What parts of the Australian Curriculum are covered?

Workshops strongly address Australian Curriculum cross-curriculum priorities Sustainability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures. The content also addresses a variety of learning areas from the Australian Curriculum 9.0 in Health and PE, HASS, Science, and Technologies. Please contact us if you would like more information.

What does my school need to be provide?

We require a room or hall with a large screen connected to audio. We ask the room to be setup for students to be seated around group tables (maximum of 8 separate groups), with 1 additional table at the front for presenter materials. Depending on room acoustics and group size, we may require handheld microphones for 2 presenters (for groups larger than 35). We require access to the room 15-30 minutes in advance for setup and 10 minutes for pack down.
